When Looking for Work: Unique Ideas Part 2 |
by John Strasser |
Last week we gave you some ideas to help out when you're looking for work. Well, here's some more unique ideas to help you land that dream (or any given this economy) job. A unique way that you can go about finding jobs (which many people forget about) is by using the internet to your advantage, specifically online message boards. Online message boards, like Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, and Twitter are excellent sources of leads. Although many internet users use online message boards for recreational purposes, there are others who use them for business purposes, like with assistance with finding a job. It is not uncommon for a current company employee to mention that their company is hiring or just outline the fact that they enjoy working for the company in question. If you happen to come across these types of discussions, you may want to prod for more information or at least do your own investigation of the company in question. Heck, just start googling those sites for words related to what you do (engineering, marketing, sales, whatever) and see how many people have used those words in their profiles — all people that you can call or email so you can tap into *their* network of friends. Another approach that you may want to take (which isn't necessarily considered "unique") isn't as common as you would think. Many businesses, even those that are locally owned and operated, now have websites. And many of them have a webpage that is devoted to employment. That employment page may outline whether or not the company in question is currently hiring. If they are, information on what positions are available or how you can apply may also be touched on. If you don't already know the online websites of your local employers or ones that you would be interested in working for, you can easily find them, if they do exist, by performing a standard internet search. As an added bonus, many smaller companies actually list their staff and owners on their web pages. Do you think the owner of a local business would know other business owners in your area? Do you think they might be willing to take a couple of minutes to chat with you about whom they know in the local area that might be hiring? Most business owners I know are more than happy to help. Most often they'll either know people or local organizations (that you probably never heard of before) that can help you out. The above mentioned approaches are just a few of the many unique or less common ways that you can go about finding a job. If you do your research, and take advantage of all the services available online and offline, then you will find any number of jobs that will suit what you want. John Strasser is a hypnotherapist and coach and helps people clear the gunk out of their head so that they can excell and thrive doing the things they love to do.
