The Cheops Corollary |
by John Strasser & Robert Heinlein |
Many years ago (in junior high I believe) I was reading Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love." If you're a science fiction fan and haven't read it — get thee to a library and read it. Go on, I'll wait. Hum. . . dee. . .dumm Back? Good. In the back of the book is a number of "sayings" attributed to the main character Lazarus Long. And the one that fits today is. . . The Cheops Corollary to Murphy's Law: Nothing is built on time or on budget. Yep. Let's just say that some things I figured would be done 3 weeks ago got done 3 hours ago. Sigh John Strasser is one of the partners here at InTheSpirit Marketing and has been arguing with web & mail servers for the past several weeks. It appears that things currently have achieved a state of de´tante. For how long remains to be seen... |

Articles vs. Advertisements — What's The Difference? |
by John Strasser |
Since we've switched InTheSpirit from a pure catalog to a full ezine (electronic magazine) format I've had several people ask me what's the difference between an advertisement and an article (seeing as articles are FREE to send in and publish). In one sense articles and advertisements are the same. That is, when a business owner or salesperson puts an article or advertisement in a magazine they are both designed to generate business for the author. But that is where it ends. An advertisement usually talks about how product XYZ is the best thing since sliced bread at solving some problem. Or it is giving the "who–what–where–how much" details about an event. You've seen these for years. When I am planning a hypnosis or nlp training, or when Jenny was running the W.I.L.D. Women Events, or someone was offering massage specials, we'd send out advertisements about what was happening. In fact, everything you need in an advertisement you can get in the 250–character limit of our free classified ads. But that's not an article. An article is designed to inform. To build rapport and stimulate curiosity. To showcase your talents so that people view you as an expert. Did you ever listen or watch the "experts" on a radio or TV show? Did you ever then come across their book and buy it? Why? Because you already know them. I'm willing to bet that you've heard of Rachel Ray or Dr. Bob. Or maybe you've listened to (to use a Phoenix reference) Rosie Romero from "Rosie On The House" over on KTAR radio. Those television and radio shows are designed to do one thing — showcase the expertise of the hosts and bond with the audience. Heck, Rosie used it for years to promote his remodeling company. That is what articles do. They entertain, they inform, they teach. They let people know how good you really are. And (in the case of article marketing on the internet) they drive people to your website! John Strasser knows a thing or three about internet marketing, advertising, sales, and psychology. His book "Article Marketing For Content and Profit" provides simple and easy to use tools and techniques for writing killer articles and where to place them around the web to gain more traffic to your website than you thought possible. "Article Marketing For Content and Profit" is available at http://articlemarketing.thebookofallthings.com. |

Work At Home Moms: Web Writing Jobs |
One of the best ways to make money working from home is to write material for the web, but how do you find the work? Fortunately, when you work as a web writer there is no shortage of job opportunities. It all depends on where you look and how much research you are willing to do. Web writing can break down into several different categories. Before you begin looking for work, you'll have to decide whether or not you want to get credit for your writing. If you insist on byline, you may have difficulty finding a lot of paying jobs. Byline jobs are out there if you look. However, the most money to be made is from working as a web ghostwriter. Many WAHMs (work at home moms) find success with ghostwriting. When you work as a freelance ghostwriter you provide writing services for clients who will then use the work as their own. Ghostwriting as a WAHM is a lucrative opportunity, especially when you focus on web writing. For the most part, the Internet is a text and image based platform. Companies and individuals who run websites constantly need text to make their websites attractive to visitors. Since writing is something that a lot of people would rather not do, this leaves plenty of opportunities for people who love to write. Web writing WAHMs need only an Internet connection, e–mail address and word processing program to get started. Your own website is not necessary, but it adds a touch of professionalism to your writing business. However, when you are first starting out you can get plenty of work without having a website. There are several different categories of web writing. When you see the term "content writing" you will normally be providing text for an existing or new website. Your writing will have to be engaging and clear for website visitors. Article writers concentrate on providing articles for websites, newsletters and blogs. Generally, articles for the web are between 400 and 800 words each. Any more than that is difficult for readers to sit through while looking at a computer screen. Copywriters are challenged with putting readers in the mood to buy. They write copy for Internet sales letters and marketing sites. Ebook ghostwriters provide clients with full–length books on a variety of topics. In short, there are plenty of opportunities for you. You just need to be a little creative. |
Playing With Words |
I fired my massage therapist today. She just rubbed me the wrong way. A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother. Shotgun wedding: A case of wife or death. I used to work in a blanket factory but it folded. I used to be a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe. |

Web Design Basics — Part 1 |
by John Strasser |
As many of you may know, I know a thing or three about computers and the internet. And while many of you know me as a hypnotherapist and NLP Trainer (which indeed I am) my background is originally in engineering. What does this have to do with webdesign? Good question. Thanks for asking <smile> You see, back in the day when the web was just a sparkle in Al Gore's eye the only way to put together a website was to actually code it by hand. You couldn't just drag and drop stuff on a page. And forget "flash" sites. PDF documents didn't exist either, much less flash. That meant doing anything took A LOT of time. Which meant you did A LOT of planning before you even went close to a keyboard. With a well thought out website design, you will be able to create a site that generates multiple streams of revenue for you. In fact, may websites turn into an online wasteland because they are not well planned and do not get a single visitor. The search engines never visit. Gradually, the webmaster (that's YOU) will not be motivated to update the site anymore and it turns into wasted cyberspace. If you want to gain any income from YOUR website YOU have to start planning it that way from the beginning. Divide your site into major blocks, ordered by themes, and start building new pages and subsections in those blocks. For example, you might have a "food" section, an "accommodation" section and an "entertainment" section for a tourism site. You can then write and publish relevant articles in the respective sections to attract a stream of traffic that comes looking for further information. When you have a broader, better–defined scope of themes for your website, you can sell space on your pages to people interested in advertising on your pages. There are programs you can sign up for so that when people surf to those themed pages and click on the ads you get paid. In essence you are "renting space" on your site to the advertising company. How do those ads get there? The company gives you a piece of code you (or your webmaster) place inside your pages. This code scans your page and pulls in live ads relevant to what your webpage is about. Which means the ads will complement your site. A page about "yoga" will have ads about "yoga stuff". Not "nuclear reactors." But none of this will happen if you have a site where everything is all jumbled together: yoga, cooking, travel, entertainment, massage, etc. The ad company won't know what to do. So you'll get...nothing. Plan your site well. Maybe you'll discover that you need to create several sites, all around a central theme. Better to know that going in. Otherwise... John Strasser has been playing with the internet since before the world wide web was invented. A Hypnotherapist Extraordinaire and NLP Trainer he uses and teaches extremely practical (and easy) ways to make psychology useful in all sorts of endeavors. His latest book "Article Marketing For Content and Profit" describes simple, easy ways to get traffic to your website.
