The Consultant's Wiggle |

There is an interesting phenomena when you work with people like I do. Often people come to me for coaching or hypnotherapy because they want to make more money, or increase their sales. And I almost always see the same thing. This is especially true if they work for themselves without a staff. Meaning that they are responsible for both making the sale and doing the work required to fulfill the sale. It's called the consultant's wiggle. And what it looks like is that you realize there is no money coming in. And so you prospect like mad. Making cold calls, going to networking groups, advertising, etc. Staying up late doing what it takes to bring clients and customers through the doors. And that works. You close the deal on the project and start working. The problem is that you get so busy with the clients you now have that you stop doing all those things that got you that business in the first place. Which means that new business isn't there when that project is finished. So the money dries up again. I know. Because I used to do this way back when I was doing engineering consulting. They key to solving this is to realize that Your Primary JOB (as a business) is NOT to serve your clients! Huh? Your primary job is to STAY IN BUSINESS!! Because if you're out of business you can't serve your clients. Remember, if you're on an airplane and the emergency oxygen masks drop down you need to put your mask on first BEFORE you help the child next to you. That child is counting on you to be there and maybe carry them out of the plane. If you pass out from lack of oxygen, that child can't carry you. Serving your clients and being tops in your industry is one of the best ways to stay in business. BUT you also need to make sure that you budget a certain amount of time, energy, and effort every day or week to getting new customers and new business. If that means going to networking events in the mornings, go. May be you need to make a bunch of cold calls. Then do it. If that means placing ads in ezines (like this one — hint hint) or on websites like craigslist or backpage then do it. No money? There's plenty of ways to get free advertising. Just remember — getting new clients is as important and keeping your current ones.
