Who Are You? |
by John Strasser |
Over the years I've been doing business here in the valley (since 1997) there's been one consistent behavior common to everyone I've ever met. I'd meet them at a networking event and introduce myself, "Hi, My name's John. Who are you?" And the answer I always get back is "I'm Fred" (or whatever) "I'm an accountant." Notice that nowhere did I ask them what they did. I see this with my therapy and coaching clients as well. "I am fat." or "I am a salesperson." or "I'm a business owner" Or if you're dealing with a more clinical issue "I'm an abuse victim" Notice the common thread here — These statements all say the same thing. The person *is* something. They are saying that either they *are* their problem. Or they *are* what they do. In either case, by making the linkage that they have, whatever it is that they are dealing with becomes an integral part of who they are. Go ahead and try to change. I dare you. Go on a diet Go ahead. Go to the gym. Go ahead. It won't matter because as soon as you stop, everything will go right back the way it was. Why? Because the mirror in your mind, the one you look into all the time, shows the old reflection. Even more than that, each identification you have ("poor", "rich", "lazy", "mom", "daughter", "father", etc) brings with it a whole ton of values, ideas, and beliefs. Beliefs about how you're supposed to behave and the things you're supposed to do. You can do all the energy work you want and it won't matter unless you also address this. Because otherwise you'll just reinforce all your limiting beliefs. And you'll still be right where you are. So to begin (and even accelerate) your change here are some simple steps you can take right now... 1) Write out a list of all the things you "are" (a computer programmer, accountant, rich, poor, democrat, republican, conservative, liberal, moral, good, bad, loving, generous, etc) 2) Look over the list and notice that everything you just wrote down has baggage associated with it. And here baggage is defined as beliefs, values, and behaviors. For example, if "I am generous" that means I *must* give to others; if I am "poor" I can't have wealth. See where I'm going with this? 3) Now rewrite that list except as a set of skills, behaviors, and conditions: "I know how to program computers" "I give to others" "I believe in right and wrong" "I don't have an money" What you're doing here is training your mind to start thinking in new ways. 4) Next find a quiet spot and put on some soothing music, because we're about to do some imagery and meditation. 5) As you relax now, imagine or go out into the void or the astral, or into the light 6) Take each item from the list you made in step 1 and just let it dissolve. Notice how many values, beliefs, and behaviors were attached to that one idea, and notice how they are dissolving too. 7) When you've gone through the whole list notice what's left. 8) As you come back into the room, notice how many barriers are no longer there and how much energy has been freed up. Now that you have a better idea of Who You Are, you'll find it a LOT easier to know and do what you want to do. John Strasser teaches Neuro—Linguistic Programming, Hypnotherapy, and Coaching.
